“…the Lord delights in those who fear him,
who put their hope in his unfailing love.”

Ps 147:11

For my first few years as a follower of Christ, I held on to some faulty beliefs about God’s character. I didn’t attend church at all growing up, but somehow I got the impression that God was always stern, looking to punish those who made mistakes. So at first, I thought this verse was telling us we needed to be afraid of God in order to please Him. But in this case,  “fear” actually means “having a sense of awe.” God doesn’t want us cowering away, but reaching for Him. Seeing our amazement at the goodness we receive from Him is what pleases Him most!
