“Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?”
In this passage, the Apostle Paul has just warned his readers not to judge others for bad behavior that they themselves do. Have you ever caught yourself doing that? I have, and it always stops me in my tracks.
I’m reminded of all the times I’ve done things that were definitely not in line with God, like losing my temper or giving into a temptation, or worse! My judgement of someone else usually turns right around into self condemnation.
Verse 4 speaks to both kinds of judging, showing us a better habit. Rather than look down on others or ourselves, we can turn to God in prayer. If we continue to judge, we are rejecting the mercies God wants to give. But focusing on His mercy and forgiveness allows our hearts to be set free – then we will have more of His compassion.
