“Is prayer your steering wheel or your spare tire?”

Corrie ten Boom

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Romans 12:2

Today’s Worship Walk: Colossians 3:12-14

photo-1449495169669-7b118f960251

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

Colossians 3:12-14

So many times in Scripture I see what I call “pay it forward” verses. The Apostle Paul is so good at reminding us of all we’ve been given by God, and then urging us to show the same goodness to those around us. It makes sense, doesn’t it?

God is love, and has demonstrated that so many ways: through the sacrifice of His Son for our salvation, by providing for His people through the ages, by being our source of peace and joy each day. We, who are made in His image, have the wonderful call to to share our blessings with a world that sorely needs them.

So, are you ready to pay it forward in Jesus’ name?

Today’s Worship Walk: Proverbs 28:19

pexels-photo-414645

He who works his land will have abundant food, but the one who chases fantasies will have his fill of poverty.”

Proverbs 28:19

“Working the land” means being faithful to do what God has for us each day, no more, no less.  But after a while that can feel routine, or even dull. We have to be careful to guard against those feelings, though, because they can lead us off the path of God’s blessings.

I’ll admit, I’ve done my share of chasing fantasies, indulging in my own plans. I can say with certainty that it doesn’t work. I ended up tired, frustrated qnd without joy each time. God has always led me back, gently but firmly. He wants us to have dreams and goals, but we need to be rooted in Him, willing to do it His way. Then, the blessings come!

Today’s Worship Walk: Psalm 139:2-4

pexels-photo-415380

You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, LORD, know it completely.”

Psalm 139:2-4

When David wrote this song to God, He wasn’t complaining about a lack of privacy. No, these verses are filled with acknowledgement of, and even wonder about, how near God stayed to Him. And we can declare the same truths David did: our Heavenly Father knows us completely, understands our tendencies, and loves us fully. No others in our lives will ever be that close or that caring.

Today’s Worship Walk: Jeremiah 18:1-6

pottery-1139047__340

This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: “Go down to the potter’s house, and there I will give you my message.” So I went down to the potter’s house, and I saw him working at the wheel. But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.

Then the word of the Lord came to me.  He said, “Can I not do with you, Israel, as this potter does?” declares the Lord. “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, Israel.”

Jeremiah 18:1-6

So often, I try to reshape my own heart. But no matter how hard I work at it, I am still “marred clay,” unable to fix the imperfections in myself.

Thankfully, I don’t have to! The Master Potter has it all in hand:

– He can work with any kind of clay.

– He has a gentle but firm touch.

– He completes the work He starts.

I just need to be willing to let Him take hold of me.

Christian Quotes: Hannah Whitall Smith

“No soul can be really at rest until it has given up all dependence on everything else and has been forced to depend on the Lord alone. As long as our expectation is from other things, nothing but disappointment awaits us.”

Hannah Whitall Smith
This is what the Sovereign LORD, the Holy One of Israel, says: “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength…”

Today’s Worship Walk: Romans 8:26-27

20180920_102631

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.” Romans 8:26-27

I find so much comfort in this verse! I don’t know about you, but sometimes I can hardly wrap my brain around a situation facing me, nevermind figure out how to approach God about it. I used to think letting the Holy Spirit intercede for me was a sign of weakness, as if I should somehow work out the answer (there’s that human ego again!). But now, I find myself leaning on Him more and more. And guess what? The times I do that, I have more peace.
