“One thing God has spoken, two things I have heard:
Power belongs to you, God, and with you, Lord, is unfailing love...”
When I was younger in my faith, I still carried around an old image of God: the stern taskmaster who was powerful enough to destroy people and nation’s who refused to follow His Ways.
This verse, and others like it, helped me to learn the more balanced truth – that God’s power is directed by His love. Yes, we see His might displayed in Scripture, sometimes to tear down walls, other times to defeat armies. But in many of those cases, God was either protecting His people or correcting them after many warnings.
The closer I grow to God, the more evidence I see that His heart is always with and for His children. Knowing that makes me less afraid of His power, and more grateful for how He uses it.
