Today’s Worship Walk: Job

christ-3926897__340

God stretches the northern sky over empty space and hangs the earth on nothing. He wraps the rain in his thick clouds, and the clouds don’t burst with the weight. He covers the face of the moon, shrouding it with his clouds. He created the horizon when he separated the waters: he set the boundary between day and night. The foundations of heaven tremble; they shudder at his rebuke. By his power the sea grew calm. By his skill he crushed the great sea monster. His Spirit made the heavens beautiful, and his power pierced the gliding serpent. These are just the beginning of all that he does, merely a whisper of his power. Who, then, can comprehend the thunder of his power?”

Job 26:7-14

Christian Quotes: Martin Luther

If you young fellows were wise, the devil couldn’t do anything to you, but since you aren’t wise, you need us who are old.”

Martin Luther
Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. In everything set them an example by doing what is good.”
Titus 2:6-7

Christian Quotes: Charles Spurgeon

“Wisdom is the right use of knowledge. To know is not to be wise. Many men know a great deal, and are all the greater fools for it. There is no fool so great a fool as a knowing fool. But to know how to use knowledge is to have wisdom.”

Charles Spurgeon

Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become “fools” so that you may become wise.”

1 Corinthians 3:18

Today’s Worship Walk: Psalm 78:41

mistake-1966448__340

Again and again they put God to the test; they vexed the Holy One of Israel.”

Psalm 78:41

I am struck by how many times in the Bible we can see God putting up with people testing Him. Through both the Old and New Testaments, people pushed until they “vexed” the Lord, often with terrible consequences: God sometimes allowed military defeat, exile, destruction of property or even life.

It’s important to know that God doesn’t mind honest questions or doubts. We can still confidently approach Him during our struggles, and He will meet us where we are. God is fine with us lifting prayers to Him, even repeatedly, when we are unsure and seeking His Will.

What vexes God is a heart that isn’t growing in faith and trust. We have all experienced His provision and protection in our lives. He calls us to keep those times tucked away, to remember them and His faithfulness. Then, our questions will come from a place of humility – “I don’t have the answer, but God has me covered. I need to know if He has anything for me to do right now.”  That kind of attitude always pleases God.

Today’s Worship Walk: Jeremiah 31:3

heart-692312__340

The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.”

Jeremiah 31:3

I’ve noticed that most people (me included!) fall I one of three categories when it comes to responding to God’s love. They can either:

– Reject it outright.  “No thanks, I’m good.”

– Avoid it. “Thanks, but it’s too much – I don’t deserve it.”

– Receive it. “Father, thank you for this amazing gift of love. You are worthy of all my worship.”

Hopefully, if we start with one of those first two responses, we’ll grow in faith and begin to move toward the third. That’s certainly how it worked for me. The key to that change was in putting my focus on the One who offers this love rather than how I felt about it in the moment.

The depth and width of God’s love can seem overwhelming. The wonderful thing is, we don’t have to understand it – we can enjoy and be grateful for it.

Today’s Worship Walk: Galatians 5:16

So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”

Galatians 5:16

For a long time, I didn’t think much about the Holy Spirit. Since I accepted Christ later on in life,at age 30, I spent my energy on learning about God and Jesus at first. I knew the Holy Spirit was a part of the Trinity, but hardly anything else.

Once I started looking, though, I found that Scripture is filled with wonderful descriptions and promises about the Holy Spirit:

– He lives in us

– He guides and counsels us

– He convicts and encourages us

– He intercedes for us when we don’t know what to pray

– He gives Spiritual gifts to us

So how do we walk with the Holy Spirit? In my experience, it means leaning on Him for strength, seeking His leading as I go through my day, and thanking Him for staying by my side. And when we truly invite Him into our lives, He adds richness and blessing to all we do.

And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they do not believe in Me; of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.”.  John 16:8-11

Today’s Worship Walk: Habakkuk 2:1

I will stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts; I will look what he will say to me…”

Habakkuk 2:1

Many times when I want an answer to a question or problem, I look either in or around when I should be looking up. A simpler way to say that I either try to figure something out or I go on the internet. There’s so much information available nowd that we can all be our own encyclopedias.

But it’s also easier than ever to overlook the true source of wisdom we have, the One is always available to us, more trustworthy than any website, for any sized question!

Today’s Worship Walk: James 1:17

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”

James 1:17

When I was young in my faith, I focused in on the beginning part of this verse. I was always waiting for the next gift God might give me. In fact, I looked a lot like a kid around her birthday, my prayers peppered with hints or outright requests for what I wanted.

The gifts I was looking for back then (and still now at times, to be honest) were what I had in mind. It didn’t occur to me to ask what He might desire to give me. And if the timing wasn’t fast, I’d quickly get impatient. My lack of understanding had me thinking God would fill up my emptiness with stuff.

These days, I find myself meditating more on the second part of verse 17. I’ve been a follower of Christ long enough to receive more gifts from God than I could count. And though He has given me many things I’ve asked for, most of His presents were so much better than what I’d have come up with.

One of the best of those gifts has been the knowledge that He was, is, and always will be the same – unchanging and almighty. Time after time, I’ve been given the comfort and encouragement of His continuous presence. And because that doesn’t change, He doesn’t change, I can lean into His promises, and all those better things He wants to give me.
