“In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus…”
The Apostle Paul taught a great deal about living in a “manner worthy of the Lord,” often giving very specific instructions. Here, he makes a general statement about the attitude we are meant to have.
But the command to have the same mindset as Jesus Himself can sound difficult, even intimidating. It did to me for a while. And the illustration Paul went on to give only added to the feeling:
“…he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant…he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death…” (Philippians 2:7,8)
I wanted to follow Jesus’ example, but didn’t know how to apply it in my own daily life. Thankfully, as I took the time to study these verses a little, I found three practical goals for myself.
1. I can become more ready to serve both my Lord and those around me.
2. I can become more willing to give my own agenda up and follow God’s.
3. I can become more willing to consider and respond to the needs of others.
I’ll never do them perfectly, but if my heart is right, I’ll want to keep trying. And God will definitely honor that desire.
