“Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.”

Romans 12:12

I was talking with my mom last night on the phone about the coronavirus situation, in her area and mine. She shared about going out to her neighborhood grocery store for a few things, and I quizzed her on what precautions she took. (She did well!) After the call, I lifted up a prayer of gratitude that my family members all seem to be healthy so far. Then, a question popped into my head: When will things return to normal?

The answer, of course, is that no one knows. This is such a strange and uncharted path we’re all on right now, and we have no idea how long the road is. I realized that this situation could definitely trigger my “gotta have some control over my life” response. Truthfully I think it already has.

It would be easy for me to either sigh and complain that I can’t do anything, or sink into a lethargic funk about what’s happening. But in these words from the Apostle Paul, I’m reminded that there is plenty for me to do, wherever I am. If I stay busy with things like reading God’s Word, I’ll end up spending my time in a more positive way:

Being joyful by consciously choosing to put hope in my loving, gracious God

Being patient by remembering the promises of my mighty, powerful God

Being faithful by seeking to grow closer to my devoted, protective God

Are you reading God’s Word each day? There’s no better moment than now.

Christian Quotes: Chris Heimerdinger

“…Teachings are given to different men under different circumstances and in different times… [but] …the Lord is the same yesterday, today and forever. If a parent commands a little child not to play with matches, and then commands a teenager to light the campfire, is this a contradiction? It’s only a question of preparedness – one is ready and one is not.”

Chris Heimerdinger

“I the LORD do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.”

Malachi 3:6

Today’s Worship Walk: Hebrews 12:1-2

“…let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.”

Hebrews 12:1-2

Every time I read this verse I’m convicted by the phrase “fixing our eyes on Jesus.” In different translations the wording changes a bit. The King James says, “looking unto Jesus.” On the other end of the range is The Message Bible, which says to, “keep your eyes on Jesus.” And each version gets the point across.

But to me, the verb “fixing” is so descriptive – I can, no pun intended, visualize doing it. And that word reminds me of what I must do if I have any hope of staying in God’s Will. So many things in daily life can distract me – the tyranny of the urgent, as some call it. So many situations, whether puzzling or frightening, can pull me into the muck of worry or angst.

Fixing my eyes on Jesus means making a decision that no matter what is going on around or even inside me, I will keep my focus on the One who holds my life. It means that no matter how difficult or scary things may look, I will trust in His protection and provision.

The race we run is often over rough ground. Jesus is ready to guide us safely down the path to victory – we just need to keep Him in our sights.

Christian Quotes: Watchman Nee

“Faith looks not at what happens to him but at Him Whom he believes.”
Watchman Nee
“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.  I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”…He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.  You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.  A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you…For he will command his angels concerning you, to guard you in all your ways…“Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.  He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him…”
Psalm 91:1-16

Christian Quotes: John Piper

The presence of hope in the invincible sovereignty of God drives out fear.”

John Piper
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
2 Timothy 1:7
During this challenging time, I’m praying for God’s healing for bodies, comfort for hearts, calming for minds, and strengthening for spirits. He is faithful, and His plan is always good. 🌞

“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

Exodus 14:14

What a promise God gave to the Israelites! They certainly needed it – hemmed in by the Red Sea on one side, and the Egyptian army on the other. On their own, they were defenseless and vulnerable. Moses’ words must have had a reassuring and strengthening affect on the people.

Have you ever felt hemmed in by life situations? Well, this is one of those wonderful promises that we can also claim. I have to admit, though, that along with feeling reassured by it, my tendency toward stubborn independence leads me to feel challenged in a couple of ways:

The Lord will fight for you…” – I have to let go of trying to fight my own battles, and to let go of trying to control situations. Basically, I need to get out of the way and let God work, trusting that He has my best in mind.

“…you need only to be still.” – I have to remember that being still doesn’t mean doing nothing. This is the time to actively seek more of God through reading His Word and prayer. Then I’ll be ready to stand up with His power and peace when He calls me to do my part.

Christian Quotes: Richard Sibbes

When we are foiled, let us believe we shall overcome; when we have fallen, let us believe we shall rise again. Jacob, after he received a blow which made him lame, yet would not give over wrestling (Gen. 32:25) till he had obtained the blessing. So let us never give up, but, in our thoughts knit the beginning, progress and end together, and then we shall see ourselves in heaven out of the reach of all enemies.”

Richard Sibbes
We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, so that what you hope for may be fully realized.”
Hebrews 6:11
