“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”
What a promise God gave to the Israelites! They certainly needed it – hemmed in by the Red Sea on one side, and the Egyptian army on the other. On their own, they were defenseless and vulnerable. Moses’ words must have had a reassuring and strengthening affect on the people.
Have you ever felt hemmed in by life situations? Well, this is one of those wonderful promises that we can also claim. I have to admit, though, that along with feeling reassured by it, my tendency toward stubborn independence leads me to feel challenged in a couple of ways:
“The Lord will fight for you…” – I have to let go of trying to fight my own battles, and to let go of trying to control situations. Basically, I need to get out of the way and let God work, trusting that He has my best in mind.
“…you need only to be still.” – I have to remember that being still doesn’t mean doing nothing. This is the time to actively seek more of God through reading His Word and prayer. Then I’ll be ready to stand up with His power and peace when He calls me to do my part.
