Today’s Worship Walk: 1 John 1:9

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

(1 John 1:9)

I used to be scared of God. Not the healthy sense of awe that we need to approach Him with, but outright fear. That came from my childhood. Through my best friend’s Sunday School stories, I got the impression that God was stern, and on the lookout for mistakes He could punish people for.

That image stubbornly stuck with me until I started learning about God for myself as an adult. Even then, it took a long time before I could believe that God wouldn’t strike me down if I confessed my sin. To be honest, I punished myself as much as I thought God might – perfectionism combined with guilt never ends well.

It’s been a process over the last decade or so, of rooting out this faulty thinking, and then accepting the truth. Now, coming before God is easier. Confession has become a time for reflection and release. And instead of fear, I feel a sense of peace about being in God’s presence. Quite a wonderful switch!

It’s easier to go down a hill than up it but the view is much better at the top.”

Henry Ward Beecher
“We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, so that what you hope for may be fully realized.”
Hebrews 6:11

I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.

Helen Keller
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
Ephesians 2:10

“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.  For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”

2 Corinthians 4:16-18

We have been in the midst of an incredibly challenging time lately. We’re all dealing with different aspects of this pandemic, but we share some of the same feelings: anxiety, frustration, maybe discouragement as well. I can attest to those emotions being real and strong, and truthfully, at times I’ve let them effect my mood – not a good decision.

That’s why these words of Paul’s are helpful for getting myself back on track. Paul knew what it was like to go through trouble from first-hand experience, from hunger to floggings to imprisonments. Yet he remained positive, even joyful in all of them.

I’ve often wondered how he could sustain such an attitude. Well, in the end of this passage, Paul gives us the key: instead of focusing mainly on what’s in front of us right now, we need to stay focused on what is waiting for us in the future, and who we serve. That takes hearts of faith and disciplined minds.

I may not be quite at the point of calling this virus a “light and momentary trouble,” but I want more of Paul’s viewpoint. So I’ve been trying to seek reassurance in God’s Word and prayer rather than watching the news. Because ideally, my contentment doesn’t depend on everything being perfect, but on being with Him.

CHRIST THE LORD IS RIS’N TODAY

By Charles Wesley

  1. Christ the Lord is ris’n today, Alleluia!
Sons of men and angels say, Alleluia!
Raise your joys and triumphs high, Alleluia!
Sing, ye heav’ns, and earth, reply, Alleluia!
  2. Lives again our glorious King, Alleluia!
Where, O death, is now thy sting? Alleluia!
Once He died our souls to save, Alleluia!
Where thy victory, O grave? Alleluia!
