“Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.”
This verse is encouraging to me, in that I’m not the only one who struggles with people pleasing! Seriously, though, it is a comment on human nature that something Solomon wrote in ancient times still resonates today, at least for me.
Calling the fear of man “a snare” is so evocative, and so true. In my experience, attempts to make sure others are happy with me always lead to a feeling of being trapped, either by their expectations or mine. And nursing the idea that anything I do might effect someone’s opinion of me binds my spirit – What should I do or say in this moment that won’t bother/upset/offend them?
You’d think realizing that I have no control over how anyone feels would free me, and it’s starting to. But it’s taken God’s work in me to expose my need to be loved, and to help me redirect where I’m seeking it from. And the love He has for me (and you, by the way), is so much greater than I could ever get from other people, no matter how many I’d manage to please.
