“Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.”
In my Bible read through I’ve just finished Lamentations. It was a terrible time for Israel, because they were receiving punishment for their continued disobedience. I struggle with reading about destruction of Jerusalem and the horrible fates of the people. But this time, three things about our Lord became clearer to me than ever before. They’re helping me keep the right perspective as I read:
God’s Righteousness is clearly shown in all the evidence He presents to the nation through His prophets. Their lack of love for Him is more apparent with every heartsick accusation He makes. Sin like that cannot go unpunished.
God’s Love shines through even the most awful prophecies over Israel. Sprinkled through Isaiah and Jeremiah’s books are comforting reassurances that God is not letting go of them. He cannot totally forsake His own.
God’s Faithfulness comes out in the midst of harshest words. Like the eye of a storm, God provides the prophets with hopeful visions of a future time when He will restore Israel and Judah. He longingly looks forward to that day.
I want to glimpses of God’s heart inspire me in my daily worship. What’s the best way to respond to that faithful love I already have from Him?
